Nuclear Power Engineering of the Ukraine

For the Ukraine nuclear power engineering is a strategically significant element of power supply: its current and predicted contribution is about 50 percent of electric power produced in the country.

Successful functioning of nuclear power engineering is one of the necessary conditions of national safety protection of the country.

The structure of the energy potential of the Ukraine has been forming during many decades and determining by the energy policy of the formal USSR and also by using of grid system. Ukraine was one of the energy-scarce Republics, and was capable to cover its needs of coal just for 50 percent, of oil for 10-12 percent, natural gas for 20-25 percent.  Thus and so there was headed for the development of the nuclear power engineering in the territory of the country. In 70-80-x there was started construction of NPPs net in the Republic.

The first of them was Chernobyl (ChNPP), Unit 1 of which was put into operation in 1977. In subsequent years construction of Rovno, South Ukraine, Zaporozhye, Khmelnitskaya NPPs were started.  In the follow table data about Ukrainian NPPs under operation are presented.

Today in Ukraine four NPP are under operation, there are 15 WWR type Units (water-moderated water-cooled power reactor) there, their total capacity is 13880 MW. While the past decade total annual energy production in Ukraine was increased, part of energy producing at nuclear power plants was increased also. That is, nuclear power engineering became a main stabilizing factor of the country power supply system.   

All the above mentioned facts and also, analysis of power demands of the country say about advisability and necessity to develop in Ukraine nuclear power engineering. Choosing this kind of the way matches the world tendency also.
